12. RUBBISH
It seems like weâre there for hours. Neither of us want to risk being seen by Tristan or anyone else.
Miles sneaks another look. âI think theyâve gone.â
âYou sure?â I ask.
âNo, but we need to get back.â
We cautiously slip out from behind the bin. Thereâs no sign of the Welbeck Warriors.
âLetâs get back to the chalet,â says Miles.
âWhat if theyâre waiting for us?â I ask. âWhat if Tristan and his mates are there?â
âWe have to take that risk. We canât go anywhere else. Not looking like this.â
Heâs right. Neither of us are wearing a shirt or shoes. And with me standing there in my underpants, we look like crazy kids. If we hang around, weâre gonna get in trouble with someone, thatâs for sure.
So, we creep back to our block. Tristan and his gang seem to have given up harassing us and moved on to other things.
âReady?â asks Miles.
âReady.â
We dash up the metal steps to our balcony and bang on our chalet door. When Daveâs dad opens it, he does not look happy.
âJed! Miles!â he says. âWhere on earth have you been! I told you not to go anywhere!â
âSorry,â says Miles. âThere was a spider, and we tried to get away from it and we got locked out.â
âSo you just wandered around the holiday park in your underwear?â
âNo itâs just...â Iâm about to explain about Tristan, but I realise how ridiculous the whole thing will sound. Thereâs no point.
âIâm disappointed in you, boys.â Daveâs dad gives us a stern look. âWeâve been back for ages with your food. Itâll be stone cold by now and thereâs no way to heat it up. Mind you, it serves you right.â
âSorry.â
âYou better be. I donât want you leaving the chalet again this evening. You two are grounded.â
Grounded in the smallest chalet in the world with no phone and no decent TV. Thatâs just perfect.
We shuffle past him.
âWhat the...â For once, even Brandon doesnât know what to say.
âWhy did you go out looking like that?â asks Luke.
I shrug, like itâs no biggie. But I can feel myself going red.
âWell, you better wash your hands before you eat anything,â says Daveâs mum.
We do as weâre told. Iâm desperate for food and descend on the Maccy Dâs bag as soon as my hands are clean. Daveâs dad wasnât kidding: it really is stone cold. I force it down anyway. Iâm hungry and thereâs nothing else on offer.
I finally take a shower while the others head off to play pool. I wish we could go with them, but I guess Daveâs dad is right. We shouldnât have left the chalet, however big the spider was.
And that reminds me: we still donât know what happened to it. Daveâs dad says he never saw any spider. He thinks weâre making the whole thing up. That means itâs still in here somewhere. The thought of it makes me shudder.
As I come out of the bathroom, Miles has pity on me and slings me a t-shirt and some shorts. They bury me, but itâs better than putting the pink kit back on.
