12. RUBBISH

It seems like we’re there for hours. Neither of us want to risk being seen by Tristan or anyone else.

Miles sneaks another look. ‘I think they’ve gone.’

‘You sure?’ I ask.

‘No, but we need to get back.’

We cautiously slip out from behind the bin. There’s no sign of the Welbeck Warriors.

‘Let’s get back to the chalet,’ says Miles.

‘What if they’re waiting for us?’ I ask. ‘What if Tristan and his mates are there?’

‘We have to take that risk. We can’t go anywhere else. Not looking like this.’

He’s right. Neither of us are wearing a shirt or shoes. And with me standing there in my underpants, we look like crazy kids. If we hang around, we’re gonna get in trouble with someone, that’s for sure.

So, we creep back to our block. Tristan and his gang seem to have given up harassing us and moved on to other things.

‘Ready?’ asks Miles.

‘Ready.’

We dash up the metal steps to our balcony and bang on our chalet door. When Dave’s dad opens it, he does not look happy.

‘Jed! Miles!’ he says. ‘Where on earth have you been! I told you not to go anywhere!’

‘Sorry,’ says Miles. ‘There was a spider, and we tried to get away from it and we got locked out.’

‘So you just wandered around the holiday park in your underwear?’

‘No it’s just...’ I’m about to explain about Tristan, but I realise how ridiculous the whole thing will sound. There’s no point.

‘I’m disappointed in you, boys.’ Dave’s dad gives us a stern look. ‘We’ve been back for ages with your food. It’ll be stone cold by now and there’s no way to heat it up. Mind you, it serves you right.’

‘Sorry.’

‘You better be. I don’t want you leaving the chalet again this evening. You two are grounded.’

Grounded in the smallest chalet in the world with no phone and no decent TV. That’s just perfect.

We shuffle past him.

‘What the...’ For once, even Brandon doesn’t know what to say.

‘Why did you go out looking like that?’ asks Luke.

I shrug, like it’s no biggie. But I can feel myself going red.

‘Well, you better wash your hands before you eat anything,’ says Dave’s mum.

We do as we’re told. I’m desperate for food and descend on the Maccy D’s bag as soon as my hands are clean. Dave’s dad wasn’t kidding: it really is stone cold. I force it down anyway. I’m hungry and there’s nothing else on offer.

I finally take a shower while the others head off to play pool. I wish we could go with them, but I guess Dave’s dad is right. We shouldn’t have left the chalet, however big the spider was.

And that reminds me: we still don’t know what happened to it. Dave’s dad says he never saw any spider. He thinks we’re making the whole thing up. That means it’s still in here somewhere. The thought of it makes me shudder.

As I come out of the bathroom, Miles has pity on me and slings me a t-shirt and some shorts. They bury me, but it’s better than putting the pink kit back on.
